The Preaching Of John The Baptist<\/strong>
\nMathew Chapter 3<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the Wilderness of Judea [along the western side of the Dead Sea] and saying,
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. This is the one who was mentioned by the prophet Isaiah when he said,
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cTHE VOICE OF ONE SHOUTING IN THE WILDERNESS<\/small>, <\/span>\u2018PREPARE THE ROAD FOR THE<\/small> LORD<\/small>, <\/span>MAKE<\/small> HIS HIGHWAYS STRAIGHT<\/small> (level, direct).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Now this same John had clothing made of camel\u2019s hair and a [wide] leather band around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. At that time Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, \u201cYou brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the [divine] wrath and<\/em> judgment to come?
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. So produce fruit that is consistent with repentance [demonstrating new behavior that proves a change of heart, and a conscious decision to turn away from sin];
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. and do not presume to say to yourselves [as a defense], \u2018We have Abraham for our father [so our inheritance assures us of salvation]\u2019; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children (descendants) for Abraham.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. And already the axe [of God\u2019s judgment] is swinging toward the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  11. \u201cAs for me, I baptize you with water because of [your] repentance [that is, because you are willing to change your inner self\u2014your old way of thinking, regret your sin and live a changed life], but He (the Messiah) who is coming after me is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove [even as His slave]; He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit and [you who remain unrepentant] with fire (judgment).
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. \u201cHis winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear out His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat (believers) into His barn (kingdom), but He will burn up the chaff (the unrepentant) with unquenchable fire.\u201d
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  13. Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan [River], to be baptized by him.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  14. But John tried to prevent Him [vigorously protesting], saying, \u201cIt is I who need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?\u201d
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  15. But Jesus replied to him, \u201cPermit it just now; for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.\u201d Then John permitted [it and baptized] Him.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  16. After Jesus was baptized, He came up immediately out of the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he (John) saw the<\/span> Spirit of God<\/span><\/a> descending as a dove and lighting on Him (Jesus),<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  17. and behold, a voice from heaven said, \u201cThis is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased and<\/em> delighted!\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Chapter 4: 1.<\/strong>\u00a0 Then Jesus was led by the [Holy] Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Mark Chapter 1<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \u00a0The beginning of the [facts regarding the] good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. As it is written and<\/em> forever remains in the [writings of the] prophet Isaiah:<\/span>
      \n\u201cBEHOLD<\/small>, I SEND<\/small> MY MESSENGER<\/small> AHEAD OF<\/small> YOU<\/small>, <\/span>WHO WILL PREPARE<\/small> YOUR WAY\u2014<\/small><\/span><\/li>\n
    3. A VOICE OF ONE SHOUTING IN THE WILDERNESS<\/small>, <\/span>\u2018PREPARE THE WAY OF THE<\/small> LORD<\/small>, <\/span>MAKE<\/small> HIS PATHS STRAIGHT<\/small>!\u2019\u201d
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins [that is, requiring a change of one\u2019s old way of thinking, turning away from sin and seeking God and His righteousness]. <\/span>
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. And all the country of Judea and all the people of Jerusalem were continually<\/em> going out to him; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins. <\/span>
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. John wore clothing made of camel\u2019s hair and had a [wide] leather band around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. <\/span>
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    7. And he was preaching, saying, \u201cAfter me comes He who is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I, and I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the straps of His sandals [even as His slave]
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    8. \u201cAs for me, I baptized you [who came to me] with water [only]; but He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u201d
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    9. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span>In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. <\/span>
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    10. Immediately coming up out of the water, he (John) saw the heavens torn open, and the Spirit like a dove descending on Him (Jesus);
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    11. and a voice came out of heaven saying: \u201cYou are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased and<\/em> delighted!\u201d
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    12. Immediately the [Holy] Spirit<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>forced Him out into the wilderness.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    13. He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted [to do evil] by Satan; and He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered continually<\/em> to Him.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Luke Chapter 3
      \n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      1. \u00a0Now in the fifteenth year of [Emperor] Tiberius Caesar\u2019s reign\u2014when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod [Antipas] was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas [his son-in-law], the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. And he went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin;
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      4. as it is written and<\/em> forever remains written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, \u201cTHE VOICE OF ONE SHOUTING IN THE WILDERNESS<\/small>, \u2018PREPARE THE WAY OF THE<\/small> LORD<\/small>, MAKE<\/small> HIS PATHS STRAIGHT<\/small>.
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      5. \u2018EVERY RAVINE SHALL BE FILLED UP<\/small>, AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL SHALL BE LEVELED<\/small>; AND THE CROOKED<\/small> [places] SHALL BE MADE STRAIGHT<\/small>, AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH<\/small>;
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      6. AND<\/small> ALL MANKIND SHALL<\/small> SEE THE SALVATION OF<\/small> GOD<\/small>.\u2019\u201d
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      7. So he began<\/em> saying to the crowds who were coming out to be baptized by him, \u201cYou brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath [of God that is] to come?
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      8. Therefore produce fruit that is worthy of [and consistent with your] repentance [that is, live changed lives, turn from sin and seek God and His righteousness]. And do not even<\/em> begin to say to yourselves [as a defense], \u2018We have Abraham for our father [and so our heritage assures us of salvation]\u2019; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children (descendants) for Abraham [for God can replace the unrepentant, regardless of their heritage, with those who are obedient].
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      9. \u201cEven now the axe [of God\u2019s judgment] is swinging toward the root of the trees; so every tree that does not produce good fruit is being cut down and thrown into the fire.\u201d
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      10. The crowds asked him, \u201cThen what are we to do?\u201d
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      11. And John replied, \u201cThe man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do the same.\u201d
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      12. Even some<\/em> tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked, \u201cTeacher, what are we to do?\u201d
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      13. And he told them, \u201cCollect no more than the fixed amount<\/em> you have been ordered to [collect].\u201d
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      14. Some<\/em> soldiers asked him, \u201cAnd what about<\/em> us, what are we to do?\u201d And he replied to them, \u201cDo not extort money from anyone or harass or<\/em> blackmail anyone,<\/em> and be satisfied with your wages.\u201d
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      15. Now the people were in a state of expectation, and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)>
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      16. John answered them all by saying, \u201cAs for me, I baptize you [only] with water; but One who is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I is coming, and I am not fit to untie the strap of His sandals [even as His slave]. He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit and [you who remain unrepentant] with fire.
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n

      18. So with many other appeals and<\/em> various admonitions John preached the good news (gospel) to the people.
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      19. But when Herod [Antipas] the tetrarch was repeatedly<\/em> reprimanded [and convicted by John\u2019s disapproval] for having Herodias, his brother\u2019s wife [as his own], and for all the wicked things that Herod had done,
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      20. he also added this to them all: he locked up John in prison.
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      21. Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, the [visible] heaven was opened,
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      22. and t<\/a><\/span>he Holy Spirit<\/span> descended on Him in bodily form like a dove,<\/span><\/strong> and a voice came from heaven, \u201cYou are My Son, My Beloved, in You I am well-pleased and<\/em> delighted!\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \u00a0John Chapter<\/strong> 1<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        19.\u00a0 This is the testimony of John [the Baptist] when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, \u201cWho are you?”.<\/span><\/p>\n

        20.\u00a0 And he confessed [truthfully] and did not deny [that he was only a man], but acknowledged, \u201cI am not the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        21.\u00a0 They asked him, \u201cWhat then? Are you Elijah?\u201d And he said, \u201cI am not.\u201d \u201cAre you the [promised] Prophet?\u201d And he answered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        22. <\/span>Then they said to him, \u201cWho are you? Tell us,<\/em> so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        23.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI am THE VOICE OF ONE SHOUTING IN THE WILDERNESS<\/small>, \u2018MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE<\/small> LORD<\/small>,\u2019 as the prophet Isaiah said.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

        24.\u00a0 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.<\/span><\/p>\n

        25.\u00a0 They asked him, \u201cWhy then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        26.\u00a0 <\/span>John answered them, \u201cI baptize [only] in water, but among you there stands One whom you do not recognize and<\/em> of whom you know nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

        27.\u00a0 \u201cIt is He [the preeminent One] who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie [even as His slave].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        28.\u00a0 These things occurred in Bethany across the Jordan [at the Jordan River crossing], where John was baptizing.<\/span><\/p>\n

        29.\u00a0 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, \u201cLook! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!<\/span><\/p>\n

        30.\u00a0 This is He on behalf of whom I said, \u2018After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I and<\/em> has priority over me, for He existed before me.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

        31.\u00a0 \u201cI did not recognize Him [as the Messiah]; but I came baptizing in water so that He would be [publicly] revealed to Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        32.\u00a0 John gave [further] evidence [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], saying, \u201cI have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.<\/span><\/p>\n

        33.\u00a0 I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah], but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, \u2018He upon whom you see the Spirit<\/a><\/span> descend and remain, this One is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.\u2019<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        34.\u00a0 \u201cI myself have [actually] seen [that happen], and my testimony is that this is the Son of God!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

        The Prophet Elijah Chapter 4<\/strong>
        \n5.\u00a0 \u201cBehold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD<\/small>.<\/span><\/p>\n

        6.\u00a0 \u201cHe will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers [a reconciliation produced by repentance], so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse [of complete destruction].\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
